Pottery

Egídio Santos is a master potter in São Pedro do Corval, where clay has been given soul for generations. Heir to a family tradition spanning over five generations, he began working with clay as a teenager and is now a living symbol of Alentejo pottery.

In his workshop, everything begins with raw clay, sourced from the banks of the Guadiana River. After being thoroughly kneaded by hand, the clay is shaped on the potter’s wheel — an ancient technique that demands precision, strength, and sensitivity. Each piece is crafted with patience, respecting the rhythm of the clay and the hands of the master.

Once shaped, the pieces air-dry for days before being fired in a wood-burning kiln, where they gain strength, color, and character. The result is pots, jars, and one-of-a-kind pieces.

Egídio keeps tradition alive, but he’s not afraid to innovate — exploring new forms, finishes, and uses, always with deep respect for the past.
