An hybrid between a magazine and an artistic platform, the project takes on Portuguese recipes and culinary traditions that are widely consumed but less celebrated; the first edition is all about francesinha.
It all came about intending to look deeper into the popular recipes of Portugal — those that are not always highlighted in the media or enjoy great airtime in discussions about our gastronomy, but that are spread through mouths and tables.
Farta is a mix of a print magazine (or is it more of a zine?) and an artistic platform to promote the most popular food in Portugal. The idea is to take recipes and dishes widely consumed in the country and show how they characterize and define our food culture. Therefore, more than an object printed on paper and ink, Farta is a discussion to have at the table.
The result of a collaboration between the writer and food journalist Rafael Tonon (who acted as content editor) and the design studio Another Collective (which took care of all the design), Farta is a project to value the popular cuisine of Portugal but with an eye on the artistic and behavioral manifestations behind them.
In each issue, we approach a dish that helps to form the Portuguese identity at the table, from articles and essays that go beyond culinary and historical themes. Throughout its pages, Farta aims to tell the story of people, to show different approaches and interpretations that these dishes can generate.
Therefore, in addition to journalists, cooks, and writers, we have the help of photographers and artists who create their works with this particular recipe as inspiration. In this first edition, whose theme is francesinha (the popular sandwich from Porto), we have ceramists (BePolar Design Studio) creating a specific dish to eat francesinha, a designer (Min) thinking up an exclusive illustration for it and a photographer (Pedro Lopes) to propose an essay on the tables where it is abundantly consumed.
In addition, the topics covered in each edition range from a more anthropological approach to recipes, different ways of consuming and seeing them, and opinion articles from people who think about their role in our society. We propose new looks at what has always been on the table. Farta will be a biannual magazine, always focusing on the country's traditional recipes.
Farta is a democratic platform, and therefore open to everyone to give their opinion and contribute to the valorization of traditional Portuguese cuisine. We are available to receive any recommendations or questions regarding the current edition and/or future editions.
Issue #1: Francesinha
The francesinha is the biggest gastronomic stronghold in the city of Porto. Invicta's most popular sandwich was the pretext to bring together an array of diners avid for knowledge to think about its magic and the rituals surrounding it. From the sauce to the professionals who dedicate themselves to preparing it daily, from the search for the perfect recipe to the limits that the dish allows, the articles are pretty plural.
In this issue, we have the collaboration of the photographers Álvaro Martino, Tiago Lessa and Pedro Lopes from the ceramic studio BePolar Design Studio, journalists Teresa Castro Viana and Inês de Matos Andrade, as well as artists, and writers, among others.
